Third finger, left hand. That’s where unmarried fashion-magazine editor Margot Sherwood Merrick (Myrna Loy) parks a wedding ring, hoping to deter male colleagues who have more than business on their minds. Then a smitten artist (Melvyn Douglas) learns Margot’s secret and begins a charade of his own by passing himself off as her beloved hubby. Loy and Douglas, expert romantic farceurs who sparkled in some of Hollywood’s best romantic comedies (including Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House) are splendidly sophisticated and delightfully goofy in their first film together. “I adored him,” Loy said of the man who became her longtime friend off screen. Their camaraderie rings some funny on-screen wedding bells.

A delightfully and timeless movie plot. plot.
The movie takes place some years ago, however the female character is a witty, working professional in the publishing industry and tries hard to remain single in a day and age where all woman were expected to be married. She meets her match when she meets an artist whose artworks are beginning to be noticed by the desired art dealers of their day., and each other character is determined to not let loveâ¤ï¸ get in the way of their climb to success. It is a fast pace, romantic comedy with an unexpected end. If you are from Ohio, or went to Ohio State University you will like it even more because of the references to certain towns and OSU alma matar songs. It is worth the few dollars and a few hours of well spent time. Just pass it onto a friend.

Wonderful older movie
Myrna Loy is just great in this movie along with Melvyn Douglas itâs a enjoyable story the way movies used to be, one to be watched over again for older and young adults.

Bantering comedy movie
Myrna Loy plays an editor whose boss is married but likes to chase pretty women. To avoid this, Myrna invents a fake husband, who also comes in handy with her own suitors. When she meets and falls for Melvyn Douglas, someone accidentally mentions Myrna’s husband to Melvyn which shatters their romance. Melvyn soon realizes that Myrna’s ‘husband’ is a creation. He arrives at Myrna’s house and introduces himself as her husband causing a number of comedic situations. Myrna does her utmost to lose him and tries to come up with a plan to divorce her ‘husband’. It was a comedic movie.

Hilarious movie with 2 great leads in Myrna Loy and Melvyn Douglas
Hilarious movie with 2 great leads in Myrna Loy and Melvyn Douglas. The chemistry between them is great. (Evidently they were very good friends offscreen). The plot concerns a successful career woman who has invented a non-existent husband so she won’t get harassed at work! She meets the Douglas character accidentally and they take a liking to each other. Initially she doesn’t tell him she’s supposedly married but a friend of hers lets it slip out when the 2 of them are out at a restaurant on a date. Douglas gets upset and investigates and eventually poses as the fake husband who nobody of course has ever met. From then on there are more and more misunderstandings and the movie gets funnier and funnier. Good ending too! Highly recommended.

I Guess The Thumb Is Not A Finger
This is an excellent print. Video and audio look like the movie was just released. If you’re looking to buy this movie then you’ve probably already seen it. After all its was released 75 years ago. The story is simple and cute. Some good laughs (especially Myrna’s fruit hat that wasn’t even supposed to be funny) but most of the movie you’ll keep a smile on your face. The days are gone when children could sit and watch a contemporary adult movie with their parents but thanks to DVDs we can go back in time and make it possible. Make this movie a part of your library.Highly recommended

You can well afford to miss this movie
This movie doesn’t do justice to the comic talents of either Myrna Loy or Melvyn Douglas who were wonderful together in Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House.

Delightful Comedy!
I have watched this movie twice already since it arrived in the mail the other day. It’s so funny. I love it. Myrna Loy is delightful and irresistible as the main character who concocts an imaginary husband and Melvyn Douglas does very well as the man who decides to masquerade as that husband. They have great screen chemistry and good rapport between them. It is fun to watch them reacting to each other. So far, my favorite scenes are when Melvyn shows up at Myrna’s house as her long lost husband and also the scene where Myrna puts on a Brooklyn tough girl accent much to the surprise of Melvyn and the visitors from Ohio. Hilarious!Fans of comedies of the 30’s and 40’s(such as the William Powell/Myrna Loy comedies and Cary Grant comedies) will love this one as well.

A very funny movie from back in the days when they knew …
A very funny movie from back in the days when they knew how to make movies. No fancy gimmicks, just great storytelling. Myrna Loy and Melvyn Douglas are a great pair. I would also recommend “Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House” and “The Thin Man” movies.

Myrna Loy plays an accomplished editor with a high-powered job at magazine in 1940s New York. In order to stave off unwanted male attention, she pretends to be married. Complications ensue when she meets Melvyn Douglas and falls in love with him. This is an excellent romantic comedy: charming, interesting story and great chemistry between the two leads (who are both very good). I find some old movies too frantic with people talking much faster than you normally do, running around hysterically (e.g., screwball comedies at their worst). This is – thankfully – not one of these movies: even though there are no subtitles, you can actually hear what everyone says. It is a genuinely amusing romantic comedy with two very likable lead actors.

Great sound and vision on this rare golden oldie. Myrna Loy is in top form and she and Melvin Douglas spark well. Recommended.
