A gifted cartoonist’s life comes apart at the seams when his drawing hand is accidentally severed. Slowly, painfully, he tries to adjust but a terrifying evil creeps into his consciousness. And one by one, the people who stand in his way begin to die. Written and directed by Academy Award winner* Oliver Stone, this spellbinder showcases a vivid central performance by Michael Caine and wonderfully ghoulish special effects by veteran macabre master Carlo Rambaldi. Stone called for more than 30 different hands to be designed, all used in particular situations. “We had a crawling hand, a walking hand, a strangling hand,” he explains. “Each did something entirely different. They were really quite exciting.” And they’ll keep you guessing right up to the very end!

    Very Nice!
Note: this is a review of the Warner Archive edition, which was purchased when the original DVD began halting and skipping about half-war through. So the /first/ thing to say is that the Warner Archive plays all the way through! This is a very early pre-political Oliver Stone horror film about a man whose severed hand follows him across the continent, killing various people whenever it gets close enough to him. Or is the story of a man who has psychotic breaks and kills the victims himself? The only way to find out is to watch the movie!

This is a real good movie to me
This is a real good movie to me. I bought it to replace a copy that I had from several years back that was freezing up at chapter 6 and I don’t know why because it was in mint condition and all my other DVD’s play fine. Nevertheless, this is a great film, which was one of the early films for Oliver Stone, whom also had a cameo appearance. The soundtrack features one of my favorite Blondie songs, “Union City Blue”. The story is about John Lansdale, a comic strip artist and his creation, Mandro, who’s hand is severed in a freak accident while arguing with his wife about her desire for a separation. He tries to draw again with his left hand and after failing, he takes up teaching art class. The events that happen thereafter deal with psychosis, bad dreams and murders where John is unknowingly the perpetrator due to his psychotic state of mind.

The HAND did not want to work!
Damn, I had a hard time getting this DVD to work. I returned one disc to Amazon (by way of drop box locker …) after the dvd refused to play … and the second dvd I almost gave up on… BUT The Hand finally worked; and played when I tried the commentary with Oliver Stone too. Phew! The ordeal was kinda exhausting.Anyways, Stone’s honest sometimes very humble commentary made the movie a little better. He mocked his own ‘lizard tail’ special effect and, also, rhetorically asked himself “what was I thinking …!” For giving himself a small acting role. Actually, I think he did a good job acting.Stone also points out the book was a very good psychological thriller (character study?) and his movie is just that: more psychological thriller than a horror movie. But, don’t fret. The memorable severed hand scene and then a murder (or two) should keep the tension growing for die hard horror fans. The Hand is not a great moviebut it is rather fun in a sometimes demented sort of way.Not surprisingly you probably won’t soon forget Michael Caine’s performance. He covers multiple levels of intense emotions.Andrea Marcovicci and Annie McEnroe — as the wife and a possible mistress, respectively— keep the proceedings from becoming a one man show. The young daughter is the girl who played young Kristina in the Fay Dunaway as Joan Crawford bio Mommy Dearest.Bruce McGill (Animal House; Rizzoli and Isles tv show) pops up as a teacher and drinking buddy.Overall, It was good to see The Hand (1981) again after 40 years. Wow. Kinda weird I have never noticed this on tv since first seeing on HBO or Showtime back in the early 80s.It made more sense even if I’m not sure if the ending makes sense; or is plausible.Worth checking out — if you wanna chance The Hand (DVD) working or not.3.6 stars lowered by the cheap lizard tail effect and of course the faulty dvd(s).

oliver stone in his second feature
very interesting psychological thriller, watching michael caines character descend into madness is fun and uneasy..oliver stone shows talent early on here in his direction and pacing of the picture..some black and white shifts and lighting cues that accent caines character ever increasing anger toward his wife and consuming madness that culminates in a climactic reveal at the end that some might see coming but i was still unsure ..in credit to the performance from michael caine and the direction of the mighty Mr. Stone!! highly recommended if your a stone fan and want to see his early work..would have bee very interesting if stone had complete control on final cut to see what more he would have done with the psychological aspects of the novel

“The Hand” is good, not great, but fun…
Based upon Brandel’s “The Lizard’s Tail”, this Stone film features a great performance by the usually obstinate Michael Caine, and the scene where he gets his hand torn off is sensationally bloody! The film lifts and lulls in spots, but I didn’t find it boring it all, as a piece of film history it is an interesting view. Stone was obviously having fun here, and the film is in turn fun to watch. The audio commentary is great–Stone starts having feelings when he suddenly remembers shooting the nude scene with Annie McEnroe which is funny–and he is very informative about the making of the film and the Brandel book. C+

    Good scares…
I saw this movie at the drive-in when it first came out and had forgotten how well-made it is. But considering it was done by Oliver Stone I should have remembered what a classy production it is. Michael Caine does a superb acting job as well as the others involved. James Horner did the score and effects were provided by Carlo Rambaldi. The transfer looks very good also. Recommended for horror fans or Oliver Stone fans or both.

I do not know why movies filmed and released in the UK can not be released in English. La Mano is Spanish, for “The Hand” the original film title. The movie is available in the original english. It would have been nice if the english translation had made it to the cover. A bilingual cover would have been great! I loved the film have no complaints about the product aside from the fact that it is not produced for the english language. The movie is just as I remembered it. Creepy!

Rimanevano, nondimeno, alcune eccellenze.
