THE EPIC SAGA THAT INSPIRED THE APPLE TV+ SERIES FOUNDATION • Nominated as one of America’s best-loved series by PBS’s The Great American Read
For twelve thousand years the Galactic Empire has ruled supreme. Now it is dying. But only Hari Seldon, creator of the revolutionary science of psychohistory, can see into the future—to a dark age of ignorance, barbarism, and warfare that will last thirty thousand years. To preserve knowledge and save humankind, Seldon gathers the best minds in the Empire—both scientists and scholars—and brings them to a bleak planet at the edge of the galaxy to serve as a beacon of hope for future generations. He calls his sanctuary the Foundation.
Collected in this boxed set, Foundation, Foundation and Empire, and Second Foundation form the celebrated original trilogy that started it all. One of the most influential in the history of science fiction, the Foundation series is celebrated for its unique blend of breathtaking action, daring ideas, and extensive worldbuilding. Here, Asimov has written a timely and timeless saga of the best—and worst—that lies in humanity, and the power of even a few courageous souls to shine a light in a universe of darkness.

Original and engaging
I have been working my way through the classics of the sci-fi genre. The Dune series and the Enderâs Game series are by far my favorites, and though I caught up with them only recently, they stand the test of time like few others! As a fan of good sci-fi world building and the. playing out of a societal question in that world. I would rank the Foundation series well below the other two offerings I mentioned. That said, it is well above many others in the genre. If you have seen the new TV series or are planning on watching it. This is one of those vary rare times where the movie is better than the book. But the movie is only that good because of the world building laid down by the book.

Absolute classics
Isaac Asimov earned PhDs in chemistry and mathematics, and was a full time college professor in these subjects, so be prepared to keep up. That’s expected from many of his works, including these books. I’m a retired engineer, so I actually enjoy reading these books. The type font and the paperback book size are great for travel, such as on a long airplane flight. Each chapter is relatively short, so you can start and stop reading in short increments. I highly recommend these books for astute high school through post graduate college students, and adults who like sophisticated, complex, and technical science fiction stories.

A science fiction classic by a prolific master
It is almost impossible to read Asimovâs trilogy with the same wonder it created in the 1940âs and 1950âs. It was virtually unique at the time in its scope and boldness. From a vantage of 70 years later, one can see a young Asimov flexing his imagination and honing his skills as a writer. The first volume reads like the series of well- crafted novellas that it is. The second volume introduces the Mule in a way that seems almost haphazard. The Mule is a Deus Ex Machina that pivots the entire series and while Asimov uses the character skillfully, the development lacks the genius of his later writing. The Second Foundation volume begins with a polished confrontation between the Mule and the Second Foundation. It is an artful set piece that easily surpasses the storytelling in the second volume. This is a classic by a master science fiction writer who was a polymath. It isnât his mature work or his best writing but it deserves to be read as a monument to both the history of science fiction and the career of a genius.

a must read for any sci fi enthusiast
The sheer breadth of vision is astounding, especially for a book written so many decades ago. This series is indeed the foundation of all space-faring sci fi that followed. As long as one accepts that there are some flaws such as relative lack of female characters, something the author obviously was aware of and tried to adjust over the trilogy, itâs a worthy read. The action takes place mainly in the form of dialogues between major characters, which makes it more of a philosophical novel than a standard sci fi action story. Getting through the third book is a bit of a slog but it does pick up so be patient. Itâs well worth getting to the stunning conclusion of the trilogy. And for those who are watching the TV series, the trilogy is important to read so that the reader can understand how and why the TV show departed from the original story while maintaining some of its essential features. Galaxy, what a grand story!

Purchased as a gift
My daughter loves Asimov. She was thrilled to get the set. The set will look great on her bookshelves.

Fantastic reading
Hubby says this Asimov trilogy is incredible. Unlike voracious me, he’s a very critical reader who hasn’t enjoyed fiction for many years. He raved about these books and the scale of the story Asimov weaves with amazing economy of words. The books are very fast reads (his one disappointment!) but they’re very different from the current small screen series from Apple and compelling in a way that only literary works can be. He highly recommends.

Hard to get nto the story-line
Plan on reading all three volumes. I almost gave up on the first volume. I had a really hard time getting into the story-line. The premise is the collapse and rebirth of a vast interstellar empire in the universe of the future. I believe the first volume was originally published as a series of short stories which maybe why I felt it did not flow well. I hung in there and began to get into the story more in the 2nd volume and just persevered to complete the third.
