Paul Newman can steal a scene without saying a word
This is a masterclass of acting. Paul Newman’s “Cool Hand Luke” doesn’t talk often (the much more talkative Drag can handle all that), and yet manages to carry the entire film. His smiles, the way he walks, and the vivacious action of those slumped yet broad shoulders manage to say everything we need to know about him. He just vibrates with an energy of freedom — that the other prisoners want to live off of, and the prison bosses want to snuff out.Without spoiling things, the end is bittersweet, but golly do I love it. Luke is practically an American — shoot, almost Zen– hero to everyone except himself. He’s living his life because “it’s something to do.” How irritating it must be for the bosses to have a prisoner with such unshakeable inner peace.
