Favorite styler this summer!
EDIT: Added a couple more tips I’ve found helpful in the application process. Also, I’ve since tried purple and it was a massive fail. Did not show up in my hair at all sadly. This curl color gel satisfies my itch for bright hair without the upkeep or damage of bleaching my dark coily/curly hair. It’s fairly easy to apply, dries in a reasonable amount of time, and looks gorgeous in and out of sunlight. It’s been a great way to make summer haircare more fun. I actually look forward to wash days because I know I’ll be playing with color ð So far I’ve used this color gel for a braid out+bun, medium “mini” twists, and a twistout. I plan to try a wash and go as well. I’m hoping to use this for Ren Faire and Black Fae Day since wigs aren’t my thing. So far I’ve tried blue, gold, silver and mint. Blue is far and away my favorite color of the collection and has the best color payoff of all the ones I’ve tried. Gold was a bit of a fail–it washed my features out and looked more like mud in my hair. Mint was a bit disappointing too–since green cancels red, it looked dim and faded in my reddish brown hair. Some colors transfer more than others. I’ve found blue to have the least amount of transfer; mint and silver transferred the most to me.One con: I use a lot of product and my hair isn’t super long or exceptionally thick. I use at least half a jar of blue every time I style. If you have waist length+ hair, very thick hair or are on a tight budget, focus on applying this at the ends of your hair to stretch it.There’s definitely a learning curve with this product, so here are my tips for best application and color payoff (for reference, I have average density, fine/medium strands and low to medium porosity BSL+ hair. My natural color is dark reddish brown.):1. USE GLOVES. Seriously. Especially if you tend to touch your face. The color washes easily with soap and water, but it’s still best to use protection when applying it. Yes, it’s a hassle when you want to mix colors, but you will be glad you did. Cover your nearby surfaces too, and wear an old t-shirt or something you don’t mind getting stained. I’d also recommend a towel or cloth around your neck/shoulders. I also use gloves anytime I touch my hair for the first day or so, since I’m heavy handed and more transfer happens for me on days 1-2.2. Protect your hairline, ears and neck with a thin layer of vaseline/petroleum jelly. This will make it easier to clean up any bits of gel that migrate.3. Apply to barely damp or dry hair. You will need more product vs applying to wet hair, but it will dry faster and have a better color payoff.4. For my fellow type 4 peeps–apply to stretched hair! It will make application easier and faster since this product is more of a pudding consistency.5. Top the gel with a mousse. Mousse will reduce transfer by “sealing” the color in and speeding up the drying time. Any mousse you have at home will work. If you’ve never tried that sort of product, The Doux Mousse Def and Camille Rose Naturals Spiked Honey Mousse are good ones to try. This was a game changing step for me! Nothing will ever 100% reduce temp color transfer, but this will get you pretty dang close! Even the heavy transfer colors stay in place better with this approach.6. Dry and set with heat! You *can* air dry, but that will take a long time, especially if your porosity is on the lower end. I used my soft bonnet dryer (RIP that now-blue plastic lining) and my ionic hard bonnet standing dryer. I had best results with my ionic bonnet dryer. An hour under there (a few hours before bed) was plenty after styling on damp hair.7. Mix and match! I never use just one color; I combine them to create more dimension and show off my hair’s texture. Blue is nice on its own, blue and silver make a beautiful ice blue that I like to ombré. I’ve also mixed blue + mint, blue + mint + silver, blue + gold, and silver + gold.8. Enjoy and prepare for compliments ð

Beautiful color but beware (it transfers)
I did a pretty good job at containing this but there wasnât a time where my hands were a little pink. It pairs well with my moisturizers so my curls popped from beginning to end (left to right) I was also able to let the product go a long way so itâs a good price for what you get. The color holds but it does change color over time. Washed out well for the most part but Iâll probably have to do a ACV rinse ð«¶ð¾

Nicely surprised
I wasnât sure what to expect since I have tried a similar product a year ago and it left my hair sticky and gross. This was not like that at all. First of all it smells so good!! Also it seems a bit messy glad I have gloves.I put it on my hair when it was a bit damp to dry. I only did the ends of my hair kinda like a ombre effect. Once it dried I was able to touch my hair with out it being sticky, it drys really well!My hair is dyed dark black so the blue is a bit darker which I like, itâs not too bright. It really looks like I went to the salon and had it professionally dyed.Love the results it adds something nice to my boring black hair. My hair is wavy to curly so it looks great with dark blue ends. Now for the downside. If you touch it or add any product to your hair you will get a bluish tent to your palms but it does wash off. But it also starts to strip the color off.It was hard for me to not touch my hair since itâs wavy. I like to wet it or add product to it to make it wavier again but I really couldnât since this isnât waterproof. After a while it start to faded and disappear so I didnât even wash my hair yet and the color is already gone. So if you have straighter hair and you donât mess with it or touch it it may last longer.Next time Iâll try not to mess with it a see how long it last and Iâll try to add pics of the results.Good news is that if doesnât transfer to pillows or other bedding once itâs dry.

Stains everything, don’t waste your time
I really wanted to like this hair makeup, I’ve been exploring gentle ways to colour my curls and this was such a good price I had to try it.But please, don’t waste your time and money. It definitely *looks* really pretty, I’ll give it that – it’s probably the boldest colour I’ve seen from a product like this. BUT it gets everywhere. I mean, EVERYWHERE. Even after diffusing and styling and drying, this product will continue to transfer. I’ve used temporary hair colours before so I was prepared for a bit of mess and staying careful with my hair in the following days, but this was bad.I’m talking marks everywhere, red on my hands, forehead, my clothes. And it stains. My clothes that I wore while using this are all damaged, and I’ve never had that be a problem with any other colour before. Even with transfer they usually wash out with a little soap and water, but not with this. I ended up washing it out the day after I put it in because I couldn’t take the mess. Please just get Curlsmith’s hair makeup, or even Gemini Hues – yes they’re not as bold, but they smell really good and will save your clothes and sanity.

Goodâ¦but transferred a lot.
It worked! And if left my curls shiny! Easy to apply, but it stains and transfers on everything. Absolutely everything. After a day of wear, it was on my face, my hands, my neck, my back, my shirt, myâpencil case, my files?!?! If this is to be used, I wouldnât suggest for more than 3-5 hours. For the best, since the texture was more moist than dry, I would suggest putting it in while your hair was dry and then finger coiling. For $20, I would think itâs more worth $15? I think I paid more than it was worth. Since it was so transferable, I looked like I had a spray tan by the end of the day.
