I love this product–covers gray well, but took time to learn how to use it
I’ve been using this Clairol Natural Instincts M9/Light Brown product (Clairol Natural Instincts Semi-Permanent Hair Color Kit For Men, 3 Pack, M9 Light Brown Color, Ammonia Free, Long Lasting for 28 Shampoos), it’s very easy to use, and I love the included conditioner, which leaves my dry/frizzie hair very soft (I wish they sold this conditioner as a separate product). This Clairol product didn’t leave that dull “shoe-polish” look like Just for Men products did, and Just for Men products do not include any conditioner either. As I got older, my hair started to lighten up quite a bit (from jet black, to a dark medium brown color), and it’s about 50% gray now, with a large patch of white/silver gray right up front, which has been impossible to color. When I leave the the Clairol product (or even Just for Men) in my hair the recommended time, it only covers about 40%-50% or so of my gray patch, and most of the color seems to just wash right out, leaving my gray patch a very brassy/reddish color (100% gray “coverage”? yes; but 100% gray “colorage”? absolutely not!).So, I experimented with leaving the color in longer and longer (over several months), just to see if it would ever color my gray patch, and here is what I found (yay!)… In order to get my hard to color gray hair fully colored (or more accurately, about 90%-95% colored, which I really liked, cuz it left just a tiny bit of “highlights”), I mixed the coloring solutions into the mixing bottle and let that sit for 5-10 minutes before using it. Then, I set my timer for 45 minutes, and started with my gray patch, working the product through all of my hair (and less than 45-50 minutes on my hair, and most of the color just washes right out, and I get that strong brassy/reddish look). Then, after my timer goes off, I just wash the coloring out of my hair as completely as possible, and use the included Clairol conditioner.A TIP FROM AN OLD FRIEND: I also was told NOT to wash my hair with shampoo for the first three days. So, I just rinse my hair really well when I shower, and then use what’s left of the included Clairol conditioner (for the first two to three days ONLY). After that, I use a high quality “mild” shampoo and contioner designed for color treated hair when I shampoo/condition every day (I prefer the Paul Mitchell brand, with the Orange caps — Paul Mitchell Color Protect Daily Shampoo, 10.14 Ounce). If my hair is a little dry/frizzy, I just use a very tiny dab of Aussie 3-minute miracle leave-in conditioner (3 Minute Miracle Color Conditioning Treatment for Colored Hair 8 fl oz) while my hair is still “slightly” damp (I pat-dry my hair, not rub with the towel–rubbing makes my hair even frizzier).SPECIAL NOTE: Leaving this product in your hair for more than 30 minutes will turn it about 2-3 shades darker than you might want it (for me, it comes out VERY dark brown or almost black at first — however, most of the brassy/reddish is covered, which is more important to me). It did lighten up after a few days to a dark-medium brown (closer to a medium-roast coffee bean color). My hair is mostly gray now, but it still grows “extremely” fast, so I “have to” cut and color every 2-3 weeks (max) to keep it looking neat, which means, it wouldn’t be more than a few weeks that I would have to live with any color I don’t like (you have to decide what’s right for you).I hope this helps someone avoid years of frustration trying to get that stubborn gray colored. Good Luck!

Perfect for my husband
Iâve bought this dye for a year for my husband and help him to care of grey hair. It works perfect!

Great
Better than justformen and looks more natural

Works well- blends grays (doesn’t cover completely)
My husband finally agreed to dying his hair and beard, and this product worked to produce a natural look. He didn’t want full coverage as it would have looked silly. He got good results in 10 minutes. If he had left it on any longer, it would have like worked better, but he wasn’t going for the monotone beard look anyway. We will buy again (if I can convince him to do this again LOL!)

WARNING! This can burn like ‘Just For Men’
I was really hoping this product would work…I really was because some reviewers here said it had no lye or some of the harsh chemicals that Just for Men has. Well, sad to say, for me anyway…it burned just as bad.Last June I had some store visits to do on a business trip and used Just for Men to cover up my grey on my beard. A day later, my skin broke out in weeping lesions that were so painful, I was on the verge of tears. My face literally dripped with pus-like liquid oozing from my face. It took two weeks for it to stop and several weeks after for my face to heal. I had to cancel my business trip and stay home…it cost me wages and many sleepless nights.I thought Clairol Naturals would do the trick, and tried a small spot on my beard and a spot on my upper arm to test…unfortunately, I got the same result! My skin broke out in a rash and oozed for a couple of days. The spot on my arm is still red after four weeks, If you have sensitive skin like mine, DO NOT use this product, and if you do…try a test area first. If you had the same reaction from Just for Men like I did (and many have…just read their reviews) you may just get the same result. So what was I to do? A friend suggested henna…and boy am I glad I tried it! Henna works great and is all natural (not all out there are…get Henna Color Labs, it’s 100% organic and chemical free). Yes, it takes longer and smells mulchy, but if you have sensitive skin like mine, it’s the only way. The results are great – it looks natural, with subtle variations – not that ‘shoe polish’ look you get from chemical dye, and my beard actually feels conditioned and soft – not brittle the way chemical dyes left it. It’s not messy like I first thought…it’s a powder that you mix with hot water to a ketchup-like paste and apply it with a spatula or basting brush…It rinses clean and will not stain your skin. The downside is that it takes an hour, but what’s the alternative? A mangled face? Unbearable pain? Gray before your time?I wrote this review to help anyone looking for an alternative…hope it helps!

Much Darker
I had been using this product for a long time and a year or two ago it became scarce. Clairol only sells it on Amazon. The price tripled. I started using women’s dye and recently I checked again and saw the men’s dye was back… and so was the regular price. I was glad as I have never had an issue with it, and the results were good. Not this time. I ordered dark brown (M13) and my hair came out BLACK. I thought like a few others that maybe the formula changed. I just got off the phone with Clairol and they insisted it is the same. My hair says otherwise. I am going to try some “clarifying” shampoo to help the color fade quicker. After that I will try medium brown to see if that is the shade that will work. If that turns out too light I will mix the two together. I’ll get there but be forewarned… this is dark and yes I followed the instructions.

I use it on my beard
This product works well, it covers my grays, not itching or irritation on my face, the only thing is that you can’t save the mixture, so I have to come with a plan to use the right amount for my beard and save the rest without mixing for next applications, highly recommend!

Excellent product. Fast delivery. Recommend.

I have used this product for ten years or more. People remark how young I look for my age. That’s what we all want to hear, don’t we? I highly recommend this product. With short hair, one can use half the product by securely saving the rest for the next application.
