Beginning with the Renaissance, the culture of the West exploded. Over the next 600 years, rapid innovations in philosophy, technology, economics, military affairs, and politics allowed what had once been a cultural backwater left by the collapse of the Roman Empire to dominate the world. This comprehensive series of 48 lectures by an award-winning teacher and captivating lecturer will show you how – and why – this extraordinary transformation took place. As you listen to the series, you’ll begin to grasp not only the history of Western civilization, but the meaning of civilization itself, as this grand narrative of the past five centuries creates a coherent context for the period’s events and trends, and offers an analysis of what these five centuries have bequeathed to us. Lecture by lecture, you’ll explores the ideas, events, and characters that modeled Western political, social, religious, intellectual, cultural, scientific, technological, and economic history between the 16th and 20th centuries. You’ll learn how Western civilization was shaped by the low as well as the mighty, the practical as well as the artistic. You’ll gain a larger understanding of the political, social, and cultural events that shaped Europe. And you’ll explore the ramifications of these epoch-making events on the rest of the world, including the United States.

Great history review. Another wonderful product from Great Courses.

Engaging professor.
Prof. Bucholz is very engaging as a speaker. You feel his love for the subject matter. I recommend his course “London: The Greatest City in the Western World” if you anticipate visiting London.

it’s a great refresher course for the teacher
Thorough for a survey course in Western Civilization 2; it’s a great refresher course for the teacher, too.
E. Soss –
It’s excellent. Full of information
It’s excellent. Full of information. Sometimes you have to listen to a lecture several times to absorb it all. It’s fascinating.
Serpinius –
Not as described.
This was not the complete course and that was NOT made clear beforehand.

Pleasant ride through the centuries… with a disgraceful fall at the end
Let me start by saying that I really appreciate Prof. Bucholz presentation style and knowledge, which are really put to the test in a long, complex course like this one. He manages to keep you interest alive in this long ride along the centuries without ever coming out as pedantic or monotonous.. which is quite a feat for a history professor 🙂 His pragmatic, “typical american”, no nonsense approach to the subject is always interesting and pleasant, and a great consolation for those of us who had the misfortune of suffering only boring and insignificant lecturers in our history hours at school. Your knowledge , culture and “peripheral vision” will come out of this course very well enhanced, both on the historical fact and on what can be learned from them..So why only 3 star in my review? Well.. I have been forced to realize that prof. Bucholz as a (unfortunately classic….) good and loyal american citizen grows exponentially biased as his historical ride through the centuries nears contemporary times..The first symptoms appear in his discussion of world war I, when he blissfully ignores the consequences and responsibilities of the US financial speculations on the war, and from then on it just goes downhill.. When treating the end of world war II prof Bucholz has the stomach of calling the crime against humanity of using the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki “a controversial moral choice”…. Controversial????? CONTROVERSIAL???? And to add insult to injury he manages to say:”I am not a sufficient expert to sove the controversy for you..it would take a theologian or a philosopher to weight the balance here”No, prof. Bucholz, it would not take a theologian or philosopher, an historian would actually do fine, but a professor who is more committed to professing the truth than afraid of jeopardizing his privileges , rich salary and consideration from the establishment…Needless to say, no more than a couple of words are spent on american imperialistic policy, the horros, abuse and exploitment brought by unregulated capitalism ad finally the “preemptive strike” on Iraq. Before the course is over he manages to dedicate just less than a minute to the phenomenon of islamic terrorism, attributing it to the “mainstream fable” of a vague contempt for decadent moral habits and “reasons which are well beyond the scope of this lecture”. Again, no, the are not..they are actually at the heart of the scope of that lecture and of a course on western civilization…Beyond the scope of what I dare say would have been more honest, prof. Bucholz…
